A Surprise Delivery – version 2
Posted by Jules
Back in April I made a surprise delivery of cakes to my cousin for her Baby Shower. They went down so well I felt I had to make them again. The designs I used on the cakes came from the Planet Cake book which I was given by the couple who I made the cakes for this time. Their gorgeous little girl was born at 32 weeks and finally came home around 10 days ago so on Saturday we made a drive down south to deliver these cakes and a red gooseberry bush because of course all babies are found under the gooseberry bush.ha
I made three cakes wearing little hats, three with the dummies, three polka dots and three with the screaming baby. The polka dot cakes came about because I ran out of skin coloured icing. I think my favourite ones are the ones with dummies.
To make the polka dotted icing simply roll out some pink icing, roll some tiny balls of blue and press into the pink, roll over the icing again the cut out the round shape to cover the cake. This method could also be used to make animal print icing. I used a similar technique at Christmas to make stripy icing.
The crying babies didn’t work quite as well as I had hoped (this is what they should have looked like). I missed off the teeth as I didn’t have any white icing left. The black and red icing was the only icing I used that was ready coloured and it was a struggle to work with. It got incredibly sticky which meant I couldn’t roll it out as thin as I wanted. Of course I couldn’t use the usual trick of a light dusting of icing sugar with the black icing as this can turn it grey. Next time I use the black icing I will try using cocoa powder to stop it sticking.
All of the cakes have a light dusting of blusher on the cheeks (pink petal dust & cornflour) which gives the cakes a healthy glow, just like it does with us women! If you want to see the recipe for these cakes go here.
